Hiking the Historic Paths of Europe and New England

Dear Fellow Outdoor Adventurers,

It's been a busy year with a new hiking trip to Crete and Santorini (stay tuned for the addition of this itinerary to our website) and a range of hiking trips that have included Cortina, the Pyrenees, Cinque Terre, Zell am See Austria, the Tour du Mont Blanc and the Haute Route.  We continue to provide adventures in our "back yard," including our  Maine hiking tour, and adventures in Vermont.  Please visit our Destinations and Activities page for information on our 2012 schedule of public, guided tours which includes snowshoeing to a vineyard in Connecticut and hiking trips in Austria and Bavaria, the Tour du Mont Blanc, the Dolomites, England, and Maine.  We will also be unveiling some new self-guided hiking trips including Italy's glorious Amalfi Coast. Please stay tuned. In the meanwhile, we hope you are yielding to the urge to get outside as much as possible.  To quote John Muir, "the moutains are calling and I must go."

Happy trails,

Deborah Lewis

  • Remember the time when (ugh) your teacher made you write a back-to-school essay about what you did during your summer vacation?  We think our guests would now welcome the assigment that was such a bother in the past.  Bredeson Outdoors travelers enjoyed a range of private and "public" adventures this summer and fall, including guided, self-guided and hybrid (partially guided) trips to:
    • The Dolomites:  guided and self-guided hiking in Cortina and Castelrotto
    • Connecticut:  a local Whistlestop hike as part of our celebration of our backyard and things local
    • Vermont:  a hybrid, Green Mountain adventure  in Stowe for a group of friends
    • Alaska:  a multi-sport, three-generational adventure for a family ranging in ages 6 to 90.  Through our network of trusted partners we were able to extend our offerings to Alaska.
    • Maine:  a guided hiking trip in Maine for one of our partner outfitters.
    • Austria/Bavaria: one of our faves, our high huts and fairy tale castles trip
    • Swiss Alps: guided and self-guided trips in Wengen and Pontresina. (We have a hard time staying away from these two places and will be back there in September.)
    • Fall Foliage Hiking in Vermont: a celebration of all that we love about our adopted state.

Alaska Family Adventure

Multi-Generational Alaska Adventure

  • Our family was driving through the valley of Jackson Hole, past the National Elk Refuge, after a wonderful day of hiking in a remote corner of Grand Teton National Park. Glancing east on the look-out for elk we saw a herd of -- buffalo! We had seen a huge moose two days previously while driving over a pass in Park City, Utah on a scary, dirt mountain pass road that almost gave yours truly and our 15 year old daughter Renee heart failure. This second marvelous wildlife sighting prompted our son Robert to exclaim: "This is the BEST vacation ever. First we saw a moose, and now buffalo." Talk about a priceless moment. We certainly "got" and get what the original "dudes" (Easterners seeking a rustic vibe and experience) loved when they first came to Tetons in the late 1800's and early 1900's (and beyond). We'll be back!

Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam

We've also been active as volunteers in our home town of Norwalk, Connecticut in advocating for a pedestrian/bicycle trail along the historic Merritt Parkway and Norwalk River Valley Trail through our town, and leading hikes for the Appalachian Mountain Club.
