The Bredeson Group’s full service workplace training and coaching services focus on employee/supervisor people-management and self-management competencies. To learn more, read on:

Training and Coaching Services Overview

The Bredeson Group’s workplace training and coaching services focus on employee/supervisor people-management competencies (e.g., diversity, conflict resolution, teambuilding, change management, customer service, sexual harassment) and self-management competencies (stress management, work/life effectiveness, whole life planning, health promotion, smoking cessation, substance abuse, attitude). Our focus on the human element at work is based on the understanding that if employees “are not all there” (focused, motivated, free from outside distractions), productivity, profitability and quality of work life will suffer. Our clients are both employers/unions as well as employee assistance or human resources vendors/consultants wishing to outsource all or part of their client training services such as:

  • Facilitation: employee and supervisory workshops, focus groups, meeting facilitation, critical incident stress debriefing and support groups
  • Coaching: communication, customer service, employee/executive renewal, work/life skills, stress, health promotion
  • Leader’s guides and train-the-trainer programs: for organizations wishing to deliver their own training. Recent leader’s guide projects have included: workplace relocation during crises; coping with the anniversary of 9/11; managing change; humor in the workplace; flexible work arrangement training for managers
  • Trainer/facilitator recruitment: recruitment criteria and process development; identification, recruitment and credentialing of trainers and visibility event representatives at locations throughout the United States
  • Subcontracted training: we are able to deliver reliable, high quality, multi-site programs through a nationwide network of approximately 200 employee assistance and human resources trainers
  • Action/experiential learning: teambuilding games and problem-solving initiatives away from the office or plant, often in the out-of-doors

In addition, our workplace education services include writing educational materials for employees, managers and human resource managers (e.g., booklets, newsletters, web sites, articles).

Action/Experiential Learning

What do fun and games have to business? The answer: plenty. The Bredeson Group provides action/adventure learning services that enable work teams to step outside the office, often into the out-of-doors -- and thus step outside business-as-usual ways of interacting and thinking that may limit productivity and profitability. Our experiential learning services consisting of team-building games and problem-solving initiatives enable work groups to:

  • Energize, coalesce and move along the continuum from accidental work group to true team, whether they are an “old” team or a team resulting from a recent merger
  • Identify and acknowledge team strengths
  • Get to know and trust each other in a relaxed setting away from the office
  • Solve physical and intellectual challenges and take risks as a team
  • Enhance creativity and innovation
  • Identify and confront communication barriers
  • Understand the unique strengths of individual team members
  • Promote shared leadership
  • Develop an agenda for continued team development

We customize action learning programs to specific client objectives and organizational culture. Through skilled facilitation, we create real situations that result in real awareness and the beginning of behavior change. After discussing business needs, organizational culture, and program objectives with our clients, we develop an agenda from a large selection of possible activities that includes:

1.)     Over 50 portable teambuilding games and initiatives.  A partial listing includes:

Pipeline

Toxic waste

Egg drop

Bridge building

Key punch

Rope a leader

Helium hoop

Corporate maze

Yurt circle

Knots of people

Blind polygon

Networking bingo

2.)     Low ropes courses through relationships with adventure learning facilities that offer:

Nitro crossing

The wall

Mohawk walk

Acid river

Spider web

Animal cage

3.) Stand-alone action learning events or team-building workshops that include action learning components. (Note: even stand-alone events include “content” in the form of objective setting, team assessments, debriefing, and a “tool box” to take back to the office.)

4.) Local hikes or extended hiking trips in France, Switzerland, Italy or Austria through Bredeson Outdoor Adventure.

Bredeson Group action learning programs typically last a half day or a day. While they often take place outdoors, indoor venues provide a viable alternative, especially in the event of poor weather, or when an event is part of a teambuilding seminar. We have worked with groups ranging in size from eight to 150, and engage the services of other facilitators as needed. The range of organizations with which we have worked and are comfortable includes multi-national high tech firms, privately held investment banks, MBA students, and not-for-profit social service agencies.

Sexual Harassment Train-the-Trainer Program Provides a Cost-Effective Tool for Employers

Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas brought the issue of sexual harassment to everyone’s attention. Before that, sexual harassment was often a taboo subject, or people were simply unaware of it. More recently, the Tailhook scandal in the Navy, Mike Tyson’s conviction, and the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal have focused people’s attention on this workplace problem. Yet sexual harassment is one of the most frequently misunderstood, costly and damaging forms of discrimination in the workplace.

The Bredeson Group has developed a Leader’s Guide, which in conjunction with a train-the-trainer workshop, provides employers with the tools to conduct their own sexual harassment training. Employers and other organizations can purchase the Guide which, in conjunction with the train-the-trainer program gives them everything they need: slides, script, exercises, hand-outs, training timetable, room set-up checklist – in short, the works!

RE-Charge! Leadership Renewal for Executives

News Flash: Excelling as a Leader and Having a Life -- No Longer an Oxymoron

Today, more than ever, organizations seek to retain and energize their leaders by acknowledging and supporting employees’ need to effectively manage their work and personal lives. Both men and women executives suffer under flat-out schedules and multi-tasking mania. And both report feeling burdened and sometimes burned out by attempting to balance the demands in their work and personal lives and succeed in both arenas.

Statistics support what many time-strapped executives know intuitively: that having a life and being an effective leader are not mutually exclusive. A recent study conducted by the Families and Work Institute, Catalyst and the Boston College Center for Work & Family challenges many conventional notions about women and men executives. Leaders in a Global Economy: A Study of Executive Women and Men is the first study to look at a large representative group of very senior women and men executives and the factors that enhance, and inhibit, their success on the job and at home. The study found that dual-centric executives, those who give equal weight to work and personal life, feel more successful at work, are less stressed, and have an easier time managing the demands of their work and personal/family lives.

RE-Charge is a leadership renewal program provided by the Bredeson Group that allows 24/7 executives to recharge their batteries, transform stress into positive energy, and refocus on critical work and life priorities. The Program is offered either on-site at your offices, or within the context of off-site meetings. In either context, it provides a cost-effective, concrete tool for boosting morale, productivity and quality of work/life. In this four or six hour program participants compare their personal experience in moving ahead while attempting to have a life to the experience of other executives through a survey prior to the program and during discussion and presentations. Participants have the opportunity to learn and discuss what works and what doesn't when it comes to work/life management and leadership. They learn techniques and business rationale for having both a work and a personal life, as well as explore the ways that they as leaders can positively influence the work/lives of those who report to them. This program, part strategy session and part personal renewal experience, provides for a thought-provoking, productive and fun session. Shorter overview sessions and a multi-session program are also available.

What Does a Typical RE-CHARGE Agenda Look Like?

Through workshops, discussion, experiential activities, coaching and self-reflective exercises, participants learn and practice techniques to take better take care of themselves and manage stress in their work and personal life. Some of the activities are introspective and self-paced, while others take place in a lively and supportive group forum. Many of the activities can be practiced and applied in a work setting. Each participant will complete a personal stress assessment and come away with a practical, individualized renewal action plan to manage work/life stress and focus on total work/life goals. While the agenda is tailored to the needs of the sponsoring organization and the business agenda of the overall meeting, some of the topics that are typically covered include:

  • The connection between leadership and work/life choices
  • Who’s life is it anyway?: walking your talk with core values
  • Who me stressed?: tools and techniques to prevent burn-out, remain productive and manage energy draining stress
  • The Work/Life Wheel: my current and future blueprint
  • Things that RE-Charge and things that drain
  • My personal renewal action plan
  • RE-Charging my work team

Individual or group follow-up coaching, which helps “lock in” the learning of the day and allows goals to translate into action, is available after completion of your meeting via the Internet, telephone or in person. We are also available to facilitate relaxation or walking groups at the beginning or the end of the day, as well as to provide off-line individual or group work/life coaching sessions. Depending upon the venue selected and the program schedule, chair massage, yoga and spa facilities can provide additional opportunities to RE-Charge. The Bredeson Group also provides multi-day hiking and cross country skiing/snowshoeing adventures into which off-site meetings can be incorporated.

Which Groups Should Consider RE-Charge?

Executive training program sponsors, men or women’s groups within corporations or other workplaces, coed or women’s professional networking organizations, work/life trade organizations, conference centers and other organizations may find that this program meets a need for their members. And because the renewal/productivity connection is by no means exclusively a concern of executives, the Bredeson Group also offers renewal programs for non-executives.
